DOGS - Judge Mrs Jeanie Montford (Elvenhome)

I thank committee for the invitation to judge at this unique show held at a place of such significance in the history of our breed, with links that go back to the first Churchills. I felt greatly honoured to be asked and to look up and see the Palace in the background while judging was an amazing experience. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to organize this huge weekend of activities.
It is some years since I judged and I feel that size has crept up somewhat – a number of dogs had quite heavy bone rather than the moderate bone called for. And the variation in head types was quite marked – many had quite deep rounded skulls with deep stops, not at all what our Standard describes. Temperaments were excellent and all mouths were correct. My co judge and I were in complete agreement in making the Dog CC winner BIS.
I think I was lucky to judge in a "vintage" year for good dogs – "spoiled for choice" is an overworked phrase but in this case it was true. I sincerely thank the exhibitors for bringing such wonderful Cavaliers. The entry included many past "greats" of the breed and, I am sure, many future "greats" as well.

Veteran   (10 Entries, 2 Absent)
Some of those "greats" were in my first class of the day, surely the most amazing veteran dog class ever ... my first four included the current breed record holders, a previous breed record holder, two parent club BIS winners and a general championship show BIS winner. In order they had won 37 CCs, 12CCs, 37CCs, and 33CCs. I must make special mention of the 4th placed Ch Ricksbury Royal Legend who strutted his way around the ring to huge applause, looking magnificent at 13 years of age and who, I am told, brought the house down in the Parade of Champions.

1st  Mesds G Baker & M E Park’s  Ch Keyingham Branwell

I have admired this dog since he was a youngster. Beautiful outline, make and shape, moved with drive and activity keeping his outline, pleasing and soft head beautiful neck and shoulders, absolutely level topline, short in coupling and well angulated hindquarters. He was so clearly enjoying his day in the spotlight.

2nd  Mr & Mrs G Inglis’  Ch Craigowl Billy Elliot
Another so well constructed ... a correct head which has matured and softened with age – I think better now than when he was young. Excellent construction, he always was a great mover and still is. His great qualities overcome his heavy markings.

3rd  Miss A Bubb’  Ch Wandris Entertainer JW
A great privilege to go over this famous boy – his great quality shines through, such good conformation and movement topped of by a wonderful head and in tremendous coat and condition.

Minor Puppy   (14, 4)

Several promising babies but in a number the shoulders were not good and many were upright in upper arm, and there were some wide fronts in some instances.

1st  Mr R & Mrs H Lamont’s  Moorfields Unni
Very Self possessed youngster who certainly has his act together! Overall make and shape is lovely, very accurate up and back, moved with great activity and ground covering stride, topped off by a very sweet head.

2nd  Mr R Sansom’s  Byermoor Queens Flite
Lovely headed boy with rich pigment and with the promise of great coat to come nice mover good up and back just tended to drop his topline a little when standing.

3rd  Messrs B Rix & K Berry’s  Ricksbury Royal Astrologer
Nothing much to chose between two litter brothers for third – at the gangly stage but with good conformation and pleasing heads, should be contenders with more maturity, this boy had the better pigment.

Puppy   (22, 6)

Really lovely class full of quality.

1st  Mrs K M Coaker’s  Homerbrent Accolade
Neat compact and well made dog with excellent conformation, very correct head with flat skull correct length of muzzle and lovely dark eyes and pigment beautiful shoulders kept his topline on the move correctly broken up markings of rich chestnut.

2nd  Mrs P Rayner’s  Trirayne Kasheera
Very, very sweet head and expression even if slightly short in muzzle, still needs to develop, well angulated shoulders and stifle, he was slightly longer in coupling, correct silky coat texture.

3rd  Mr P C & Mrs R K Towse’s  Miletree Seabiscuit
A lovely quality dog presented in full coat he caught my eye going around the ring, pleasing head with lovely generous expression correct in all departments, well broken rich markings and enjoying his day, just a little slack in topline on the day.

Junior   (20, 6)
1st  Mr K M & Mrs C C Li’s  Avalcier Princeton

What a handsome young man - beautifully made, ideal for size and bone, lovely head not exaggerated in any way, good dark pigment, well knit frame with elegant reach of neck and excellent turn of stifle, moved with drive and activity holding a level topline, coat of the softest texture and well presented.

2nd  Mrs S J & Miss R J Dawber’s  Bevelmount Montecarlo at Simanbeck
Another of similar type, beautiful rich pigment well marked with pearly white, very correct head not overdone in any way, softly padded muzzle, he kept a good outline on move, very promising.

3rd  Mrs K M McMurray’s  Cinderlace Hypericum at Merryoth
What a frustrating boy – he has so many good qualities but does not want to show them off. Unsure of himself but settled as the class progressed, a classic head, well made body with well angulated shoulders and good turn of stifle.

Yearling   (10, 2)

A hotly contested class, nothing much between the first three.

1st  Mr P C & Mrs R K Towse’s  Miletree Northern Star
This blenheim caught my eye when he entered the ring but had to fight for his place as the class went on with some stiff competition. Well made all through with marvelous head, he ended up winning this class on his movement, very true up and back and with great driving ground covering stride. He was in beautiful condition and his presentation was immaculate. Did not know till afterwards he was the litter brother of my Res CC.

2nd  Mr K M & Mrs C C Li’s  Avalcier Harvard
A lovely dog of slightly different type, slightly lighter in frame, a very lovely head and expression, neat compact body, he was in full coat of the softest texture with well broken markings, moved well.

3rd  Mr S A & Mrs M T Mynott’s  Honeybet Magic Touch
A really attractive tri, good bone and substance, soft generous head and expression, good conformation, well marked and presented in good coat with correctly broken markings, he just tended to drop his topline on the move.

1st  Messrs Levy, Sedgwick & Cline’s  Pascavale Bailey

Handsome boy in full coat, a strong, masculine head without being overdone in any way, good neck and well laid shoulders, correct level topline which he carried on the move.

2nd  Mrs J Boyd’s  Wandris Comedian at Airlie JW
Slightly lighter framed dog with excellent conformation and correct proportions, short coupled, broad skull, open and sloping stop and neat muzzle combining to give a very pleasing head and expression, moved beautifully.

3rd  Mr R Stevens & Mrs A Moffatt’s  Cinderlace Sheer Milkeyn
Made up a trio of quality dogs, appealing expression, flat skull, neat muzzle, lovely eyes, well made all through, he moved accurately up and back, just not coat and finish of those above.

Special Graduate Tricolour   (10, 1)

Movement was not generally strong in this class.

1st  Mrs L Hughes’  Loranka’s Moment In Time
This boy has good overall conformation, pleasant head and expression, moved reasonably well up and back, he has beautifully broken up markings and was well presented. At only just a year old, I hope he does not grow on any more.

2nd  Mrs E Gaskell’s  Jeilohn Coinneach
Good size and bone, well made body , broad skull and neat muzzle, a narrow blaze and smaller eye just detracting from the expression.

3rd  Mrs S Coles’  Twyforde Centauri
This boy had good moderate bone, just a little rangy and long in loin, pleasant head, good proportions of muzzle length to skull, his expression would benefit from a larger eye, well presented, in good coat.

1st  Mrs A Jones’  Timsar Black Knight

Nice shape, well put together if a shade long in loin, pleasing head with nice flat skull, high set ears, large, dark eyes, movement accurate up and back and carried correct outline in profile on the move.

2nd  Mrs A Royce’s  Leelyn Harvey at Rucazan
Similar to 1st, short coupled but taller on leg giving different proportions. Strong in head with large dark eye contributing to pleasing expression, just not as positive in movement.

3rd  Mrs B Evans’  Svena The Magician by Ttitian
A good head again with lovely large eye, flat skull and well placed ears, not making the most of himself and somewhat out of coat.

Res  Mrs L Gamble’s  Lisgarth Rokocoko

Special Graduate Ruby   (7, 3)
1st  Miss L Koster’s  Harana Dynamic

Handsome boy, flat skull well set ears, lovely large dark round eye. Muzzle just slightly long to be in perfect balance with skull, he moved well up and back, coat of the softest texture, rich red.

2nd  Mrs B A Finney’s  Anberan Pumpkin Spice at Sylklands
More compact in outline, short in coupling, but not the head qualities of first, slightly rounded in skull and a bit deep in stop, lovely eyes and pigment, not using himself on the move.

3rd  Mr K & Mrs E Hardy’s  Anberan Masterfam’s Keegan
A lighter boned and more immature ruby, pleasing head, again lovely dark eyes, neat and well constructed boy who just needs a bit of time.

Post Graduate   (11, 0)
1st  Mrs C Mackenzie’s  Carsan Chazmagic

Blenheim of Ideal size make and shape, moderate bone, good depth of chest and spring of rib, a good mover, nicely marked with rich chestnut, very open and generous expression.

2nd  Mr & Mrs G Inglis’  Chantismere Mister Sandman of Craigowl
Well constructed boy, good reach of neck and well laid shoulders, short coupled, well turned stifles, enabling him to move well up and back and keeping his level topline.

3rd  Mrs K M Lister’s  Cachevell Dance In My Shadow
Stronger in head, a little deep in stop, good broad skull, massive ear fringes, a mover who went around with correct profile but his up and back movement just let him down, beautifully presented in full coat.

What a strong class – one of the highlights of the day! All six placed dogs were quality Cavaliers and have done much well deserved winning.

This dog simply dominated the class with his presence and charisma ... a mature dog with melting expression, head so very correct in all details, beautiful eyes, lovely neck and shoulders, well made body, full coat of the richest chestnut, moved with lovely flowing easy strides. My Res CC.

2nd  Mrs M Cunningham’s  Verheyen Tweed
Slightly lighter framed dog of good structure, perfect proportions, so well made he never stood wrong, open generous expression flat skull, not too deep in stop, beautiful eyes, kept his topline on the move and was very accurate up and back.

3rd  Mrs V Pack-Davison’s  Deranmar Caerleon at Verileas

2nd  Mr J & Mrs M J Hurst & Mrs S Wake’s  Llustant Paper Back Writer
Tri with such a beautiful head and expression, so hard to get in this colour, everything just in the right proportion, nicely made with good neck and shoulder giving excellent reach of neck, short coupled with good spring of rib and excellent turn of stifle, a tad more coat would finish the picture.

This was a battle royal between my first two dogs – so very little between them, hackneyed words I know but so true. However there can only be one winner and today it was a wonderful dog who captured and held my eye – absolutely correct make and shape. A textbook illustration of correct structure, a glorious head with absolutely typical expression, he was very accurate up and back and then commanded the ring with his presence, moving with great drive and authority, a sparkling performance. Dog CC and with the agreement of my co judge a very worthy BIS.

2nd  Mrs H Waters’  Ch Maibee Make Believe JW
What can I say about this wonderful Cavalier, one who has already made his mark on the breed not only as a show dog but as a producer being the sire of the wonderful Best Puppy in Show – a marvelous dog with such a great head and expression, super body and in a wealth of coat. He was simply out moved on the day.

3rd  Mrs C Conlon & Miss M Kotani’s  Ch Rathbrist Rhydian
I judged this dog as a puppy and loved him. He has one of the loveliest tri heads, so soft and gentle and he is well made under his coat – but so much coat! It hid his good neck and shoulders and gave the impression of a poor topline. He also appeared to be affected by the heat, not moving with great enthusiasm. Perhaps he will shed some of the excess hair after the hot weather and will appear in all his glory.

BITCHES - Judge: Mrs Di Fry (Amantra)

Firstly I must say I felt it was an honour to be asked to judge such a prestigious championship show by the officers and commitee of the Cavalier K.C.S Club. The event was so well organised and we were blessed with beautiful weather. The entry was a quality one and many super bitches had to go cardless, they were all well presented and I only had a couple of wrong bites which I had to penalize. There were some lovely gifts for the winners kindly donated by a variety of people. I thank my stewards for their invaluable help.
