Mitral Valve Disease Research
Professor Brendan Corcoran
Mitral valve disease has been recognised in dogs for many years and much is known about various aspects of the disease. In particular, we know much about the consequences of the disease and how to diagnosis it and have made reasonable advances in treatment. However, until recently, we have known very little about the cause of mitral valve disease and the mechanisms that instigated damage to the valve and how that damage progresses over time. With the advent and availability of sophisticated research tools we are now in a better position to understand mitral valve disease, and though understanding of cause and mechanisms are in a better position to develop interventions that prevent, treat or even cure. This lecture will review the advances in our understanding of the science of mitral valve disease that have occurred in recent years, show at what stage we have arrived and suggest possible ways forward.
