The long awaited Blenheim Palace Cavalier Extravaganza has now been and gone, and what a wonderful weekend it turned out to be. There were visitors from twenty five different countries, and after a week of rather unsettled weather the sun shone brightly on the show field with the spectacular Blenheim Palace as a backdrop. From the 1720s until the 1920s the various Dukes of Marlborough bred their Blenheim (or Marlborough) Spaniels on this grand estate and their bloodlines are in our Cavaliers of today. It was wonderful to see all these Cavaliers in the fields where their forefathers once played. It was almost like "Welcome Home"! The championship show was held on the Sunday but on the Saturday there were nine novelty classes that proved to be extremely popular among the great many pet owners who attended the event on that day. It was marvellous to see so many pet Cavaliers in attendance as we wanted this weekend to be for ALL Cavaliers, not just show dogs. There were also a few other breeds there too, which was great. The novelty classes were as follows: Chocolate Button Race (which always has the audience yelling out support for their favourite dog), Golden Oldies (a hugely popular class which drew a very large entry), Handsome Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Best Six Legs (always good for a laugh!), Family Race, Musical Newspapers (a variation on musical chairs), Dog the judge would like to take home and my own personal favourite the Fancy Dress. I’m so glad that I didn’t have to judge this contest as they were all fantastic. As the contestants entered the ring loads of the spectators spontaneously reached for their cameras and started clicking away, and who could blame them. Here are just a few of these amazing costumes. |

In the April 2008 Cavaliers as Companions we featured the Clever Cavaliers display team from West Sussex. They often put on display events, many of them in conjunction with the Southern Cavalier Club’s fun days and have raised a great deal of money for Cavalier health research. We were so pleased to have them in attendance at Blenheim and their display routines proved extremely popular with the audience. After they had completed their performance they allowed spectators to ‘have a go’ on their equipment and as you can imagine there was quite a queue.

The Cavalier of the Year Award
Last February we listed on Cavaliers as Companions the dogs that were placed on the Roll of Honour for the Cavalier of the Year Award. At Blenheim each of the nominated dogs was presented with a certificate and a prize. The winner was Snoop, the blenheim dog who did so much to help his owner Kyle who had suffered extremely bad injuries after being knocked off of his bike by a speeding motorist. Sadly Snoop was not able to attend due to prior commitments, but Snoop’s breeders, Rick Aldous and Mark Smith were there to collect the award on their behalf. Kyle’s mother Maria Knights sent an acceptance speech which was read out. This is what she said:
I would like to thank the hosts for spearheading this award and for choosing Snoop as the winner. We as a family have enjoyed Snoop every day and are glad to have him as a part of our family. Before choosing a Cavalier we looked at other breeds but all had issues that came with them, but once we visited the home of Snoop’s breeders and saw him we just fell in love, and what a great choice. Never have we had any problems, he knows and loves the whole family. He has been through so much with the family and is still the best dog in the world. But before you all look at your pets and say, "No, ours is better", let me say that if they are even half as perfect as Snoop then you are right! As you are aware Snoop has helped our son and our family through a life changing experience, and others in the process. He never wanes from giving his love to all. Kyle is far down his road to recovery now and we also now have two wonderful grand children that Snoop has taken to look after. All I can say is thank you to Rick Aldous and Mark Smith of Aranel Cavaliers for breeding such a special little dog and to all of you for keeping the breed alive. If you were to ask me if I would ever have another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel the answer would be a resounding YES! Despite some of the bad press and anti dog establishment who strive to ruin this wonderful breed. We are certain that without Snoop Kyle would not be where he is now in his recovery. I am sorry that we are unable to be here in person but our grandchild is being christened this weekend. We hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend. Maria and Kyle Knights | ||

A PHOTO OF THE MONTH
![]() This month’s photo comes from Edwina Richardson of Great Baddow in Essex. Milly is her much loved three year old ruby who adores cuddles and sitting in any patch of sun on the carpet – however small! She’s an absolute sun-worshipper! Edwina says that she is very affectionate and playful and with her daisy chain tiara looks very Pre–Raphaelite! |
