I would like to thank the committee of the N.I.Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club for giving me the opportunity to judge the Championship Breed Show in Ballygally. Also I thank the exhibitors for bringing such beautiful dogs to the show. I enjoyed to judge the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at this show very much.
I was very impressed by the quality of the exhibits and I think the CC. Winners/Reserve CC. Winners, Class-winners and Winner-puppies at this show were of real outstanding quality. Outstanding in type, conformation, coat and temperament.
In my opinion the strong points of the entered cavaliers that day were overall balance, soundness and lovely temperaments. Also most cavaliers had perfect mouths.
What I do when judging is using of course the breed-standard as a guide, but also I try to avoid exaggerations in the breed.
Sometimes cavaliers with overdone heads , bodies or bone can look very attractive, but I think it is not good for the development of the breed to reward these exaggerations when judging.
We see this in many breeds. A tendency to overdue the typical features of the breed. In the cavalier I see this sometimes in things as a too big eye, that loses the soft expression. It gives the startled look that is very untypical. Also I find sometimes the heads getting too strong .The muzzles too short and making a puffed up impression, sometimes coarse skulls.
Also I do not like the deep stops. I pay attention to the bone, it should be moderate and not be as strong as, for example, the Cocker Spaniel.
In my opinion the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel must really be a Toy-Spaniel. No exaggerations whatsoever, with a head that fits the body.
Also I love it when one can see the soft, gentle expression at first sight.
Not necessary to say that the Cavalier must show himself as a happy and jolly, gentle personality. He should enjoy himself, together with his handler, in the ring.
It was an honour and a pleasure for me to judge my favourite breed, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, in Northern Ireland.
