Dogs.   Mr P Follows
I had a lovely if challenging day and I wish to thank my committee and Mrs. Sheena Maclaine for a well run show. When I accepted the appointment back in 2001 I had anticipated that I would no longer be on the committee having served my six years period. How things change and I find myself not only Chairman of the club but confined to the judging ring with little I could do to help except keep to reasonable time. But when the club have a committee and show manager like it has, there is really very little need to worry.
Turning to the dogs I judged. There were some very good quality dogs to go over and I was pleased with my class winners challenge line up containing all four colours. They could all walk well, possessed a clean flowing outline, was sound in construction and gentle in expression.
However I was shocked at the faults I found which are definitely on the increase. Where are the necks? Many were short in neck with some so short their front movement was erratic and some almost paddled around the ring instead of walking free and straight. I include some high flying winners who will obviously pass this problem down to their offspring. I had so many like this that on occasions I had to compromise somewhat in order to maintain type. Breeders you need to look at your stock and not become kennel blind; no amount of holding the ears forward to accentuate the neck on table inspection will camouflage a short neck. This has got to be a wake up call for action.
Eyes still need watching for size, shape and not so far apart that the head looks unbalanced. Another practice that's now common and I feel is bad is stringing the dog up on a tight lead, it may hold the head up, this can be trained on a loose lead, but the dog does not feel the ground so well and sends the fronts on some in all directions.
Finally what is the point in bringing a dog to a large show that costs you a fair amount of money dirty. The tricolours seemed very well presented, you need to ensure the white and black contrast to advantage. The whole colours were generally acceptable but an unacceptable number of blenheims were not properly bathed or groomed. Such a shame for the dog let alone the judge handling.
This may be a harsh overview but it is only for the good of the breed.

Handsome well-proportioned head, superb dark eyes and he used his ears to good effect making an alert character but gentle at the same time. It's not often one comes across a compact cobby real toy spaniel with everything soundly made and in proportion but this lad has it all. A most handsome head , lovely shape, the deepest colour of eyes, large and round and spaced perfectly to create a very masculine but gentle expression. Superb neck that flows into his withers, an enjoyment to go over on the table, well-sprung ribs firm loin and excellent bone and angulation. Standing four square movement was as expected with the equipment he has, Striding and so very positive. Soundness and balance personified in this compact showy little dog.

This B/Tan impressed me so much with his overall shape, balance and quality. I have used that word balance many times in this critique but it is so necessary and requires a dog to be sound, well muscled, and short coupled to have any chance of portraying such a quality. This dog has it in abundance. Great head excellent dark eyes, nicely cushioned face, he just held your attention when you looked at him. His body was a joy to handle, good neck length lovely soundness in bone moved with flowing action, a real quality lad.

This was a very large class but on the whole I didn't find it that inspiring. I was of course very pleased with my main winners but there were a lot of very mediocre puppies that were not of good type, many with bad conformation, and many with no bone or substance. These are the bitches that will be producing in the future. Please remember that kennels are based on its bitches so you do need a good solid foundation bitch to start.
