Dogs. Dr A Schemel
It is five years since I have judged the breed in the UK & although this was probably not a representative entry I felt ensured that this country is still the main player in the Cavalier world. Wherever I go & judge the breed I never have to look far to find British connections behind my winners & even being only a foreigner with British residency I often get accused, obviously unknowingly & without intention, that I tend to put up stock bred in this country. Surely a sign of the good quality UK breeders send abroad.
I was looking for a medium sized short-coupled balanced toy spaniel with the desired soft & melting expression one only gets from this breed. Hopefully this showed in my line-ups. In both sexes I had plenty of lovely dogs to go over & in the higher classes I was spoilt for choice & some dogs could easily change places at another day.
On the negative side I was concerned to find quite a few dogs with less than round eyes & many of them showed quite a bit of white, which really spoils the expression. Steep & short upper arms could be found in abundance. This is a fault the breed shares with many other breeds these days & it appears to be more & more tolerated & sometimes I wonder if this is the favoured front assembly for some.

1 Baker & Park’s Ch Keyingham Branwell
Well known blen of outstanding quality, in the past I have only seen him from a distance but one has to go over him to appreciate his merits, lovely head with soft but distinct expression which might be a touch too extreme for some but just right for me, melting dark round eyes with very good filling underneath, excellent length of muzzle, darkest of pigment, head framed by beautiful long ears, beautifully arched neck & short back, well rounded ribcage, excellent hind angulation with deep hocks, slightly heavily marked but coat of excellent texture presented in immaculate condition, scores on his overall balance, showmanship & movement, put up a top performance for his unusual handler & represented the breed well In the group. CC, BOB & G2.
2 Lymer & Scheidt’s Lymrey Hi Command JW
Very attractive blen with floating lines, masculine head & expression, well arched neck. A touch longer in loin. Carries a big coat of correct silky texture, striking movement. Wished him a touch smaller.
