Dogs. Mr A Wright
I was delighted to be invited to judge dogs at this lovely club’s 40th anniversary show with my co-judge being Mrs Baker of Ch Branwell fame.
This is a super venue, easily accessible from the motorway system, it is light & airy with excellent parking facilities & such a good kitchen. My entry of 117 males was pretty good & it was assisted by there being fewer than usual absentees.
As a general comment, several things struck me as being undesirable & worthy of note for breeders. I had no fewer than eight exhibits with bad mouths, from wry to undershot - not even just a reverse scissor bite. In two cases, it was a great pity as they had so much to admire in other aspects. Is it perhaps caused by muzzles becoming too short?
Fronts are the biggest failing which surprised me as overall the breed does have good layback in shoulders, with decent upper arms & therefore if well exercised, should move soundly. Also, the breed is a toy spaniel & there were a number who are much too big & heavy for me to consider seriously.
Finally in the negative mode, there seems to be an increasing number of both blen & tris which are Insufficiently broken up in colour & indeed some are reminiscent of saddle backs with almost no pearly white on the main body at all.
However, having said all that I was really pleased by the unbeaten line-up for the DCC which went to the BIS winner, decided by referee George Donaldson, Ch Pascavale Jamie, a real toy spaniel of lovely make & shape, loved his size & proportions, his richness in colour with his brightest of chestnut jackets being enhanced by the whitest of white backgrounds, head is such a delight, the skull amply flat, high set well fringed ears, moderate stop, sufficient muzzle length, his eyes are a sheer joy, his outline is stunning, short coupled, enough neck to give that air of gracefulness when stacked, his coat was gleaming & as he circled the ring he showed a light, effortless, balanced stride. I later learned he was my choice for BP when I judged BIS at the UK Toydog Ch show, in the same year that Ch Branwell was my BIS winner. It was lovely to hear this & to see that he has fulfilled all of that early promise.
The RCC was a much more difficult choice as I really was spoiled for choice. It was fought out between the BP Maibee Touchstone, the YD winner, Lanola Santana of Maibee, the PGD, Loranka’s Just Like Heaven, it the 2nd in OD Cinderlace Cromwell. Each of these has, for me, definite star quality & I will be very surprised if they do not all go on to their titles. In a photo finish I gave the nod to Loranka’s Just Like Heaven. Like Jamie he is such a lovely size, his colours are well broken up & immaculate in presentation, his profile action is a joy, head is beautiful, excellent eyes, correct stop & foreface, high set ears, softest of expressions, quite short coupled, good layback in front, his backline is level leading to lovely bend of stifle, such a cooperative showman. Believe this is his second RCC.

Veteran (5 Entries, 1 Absent) This is nearly always the hardest class to judge as they usually all have the aaahhh factor in expression.
1 Gow's Lyncraeg Daydream JW ShCM
Lovely for size & substance, very showy in stance using his neck to advantage, excellent backline, so sound & positive on the move where he really shows a clean pair of heels, skull is fiat, well placed ears, delightful expression.
2 Cockburn's Evonola Talk Of The Town at Phylmars
Judging purely on head, I feel sure he would have won as his head balance, eyes for size, shape, colour & expression with a nicely cushioned muzzle were a delight to see, nice size, well bodied, showed his head off. Just not the firmness in front of 1 which told against him.
3 Rogerson's Rabymar Waltzing Darkie
Res Sutherland's Ebonleigh Jolly Jasper
Minor Puppy (14, 2)
1 Sloan's Turretbank Sloan Square
Blen, perhaps a little heavily marked but he is a lovely size & shape, really good head as the skull is flat, the cheeks quite clean, eyes round, dark & so alive in expression, decent length of well padded muzzle, good mouth, side action is pleasing as he strides out & keeps his shape.
2 Towse's Miletree Shahrastani
Not nearly so forward as 1 but he has much to like. Head is good, lovely eyes & expression, ample neck, good angles, very good spring of rib, spotless coat. Has a habit of standing with his backline rising from the withers, yet once on the move it flattens out. Just needs to firm up in front action.
3 Carter's Cobbets Dizzy Rascal
Puppy (9, 0)
1 McInally's Maibee Touchstone
Richly coloured, full coated blen in stunning condition & presented to perfection. Provided he has stopped growing I think he can go on the greater things. Has style, shape, a touch of class which comes from quality, his head handles so well, his ears & fringing are terrific & his expression I just loved, watched side on he just floats as he circles the ring, balanced, light footed & ever so happy with a correctly carried tail. A name to remember. Best Puppy
2 Dunhill's Fantasa Itz Charles
Another blen, see he is yet another Maibee Montrose offspring which appeals to me. This exhibitor produced this charming youngster on the tip toe of expectation, so keen to please & the showman extraordinaire, correct size, short coupled with decent ribcage, most appealing outline as he uses his neck so well, handsome headed with lovely eyes for shape, colour & expression. He too can motor but is at the rather testosterone charged state with his tall carriage at present but I am sure he will settle. Another with a bright future.
3 Sloan's Turretbank Zoom Zoom

Junior (10, 1)
1 Rogerson's Rabymar Untouchable
How nice to see a b/t of real quality, in such fabulous condition, correct size, well weighted bone, excellent feet, real powerhouse on the move, so busy, purposeful & sound, head so good, stunning eyes, heavily fringed ears & decently cushioned foreface all combine to give him a winning expression.
2 MacAlpine's Blairburn Bracken with Annatika JW
Lovely headed blen, quite beautiful eyes & expression, ears high set & well fringed, enough neck, well ribbed. Shade over long in loin & persisted in standing with his forelegs too far forward, thus exaggerating his overall length. Side on his action is good if spoiled by his somewhat proud tail carriage but he does need to tighten In front.

1 Water's Lanola Santana of Maibee
Another Montrose son, full of quality in all aspects, stacked he is shapely, everything flows & knits to give a super picture, lovely size for his sex, really lovely head, stunning eyes & expression, good neck, excellent layback in shoulder, firm level backline, gently moulded croup & his hind angulation completes a highly satisfactory vision, moved out soundly & his presence certainly added to the quality of the line-up in the challenge.
2 Coaker's Homerbrent Marshall
See is also by Montrose. Shade taller & slightly heavier marked but undeniably a dog with quality & style. His outline will always command attention, moves out soundly showing good extension & keeping his shape. Well balanced head, good cushioning, very expressive eyes.

Graduate (5, 0)
1 Lister's Cachevell Dance In My Shadow
Pleasing head, delightful eyes & expression, long well fringed ears, enough spring of rib & with really firm, well muscled & angulated hindquarters. Shade close in hock going away but side on he is balanced & shapely.
2 Rhodes' Cinderlace Monte for Calonlan
Think one of the happiest dogs I judged all day, what a temperament, loved his size, short coupled, well ribbed, immaculate in coat condition, his outline will always demand a second look, aided of course by that non stop wagging tail. Ran 1 close but was not quite so steady in front when coming towards me.
3 Harper & Barbour`s Pamojill Ryan at Kirkbrae
Res Renaud's Ellenaud Just William
Post Graduate (9, 0) The most disappointing class of the day with several in need of ring training.
1 Cockburn's Philmars Robin Hood ShCM
Nicely sized blen who was not over bursting with confidence on the move but he was fairly sound & balanced, nice head shape, excellent mouth, reasonable reach of neck, level backline, in good coat.
2 Mowatt's Asmena The Minstrel
Out of a bigger mould but a well constructed shapely blen, holds himself with a touch of arrogance in stance, tail wagging & being fairly compact, well ribbed, firm topline, good bend of stifle. I gave 1 the nod in head as I feel this chap is just a shade overdone in muzzle.

2 Willey & Siddle's Penemma Pick Pocket
Loved his size, very expressive eyes set in good head, sufficient foreface, good mouth, such good angulation. Was a bit restless on the move & never went quite as well as his shape suggested. His sheer appeal in stance earned him this placing.

1 Sloan's Turretbank Tobermory
Stunning presented b/t with much to like, delightful head, super eyes & expression, well cushioned foreface & such ear feathering, useful neck, well ribbed. Perhaps could be shorter coupled but so sound on the move & showed non stop to win the class.
2 Crane's Cranvarl Royal Star Struck
This lovely quality chap pushed 1 all the way. Head really beautiful with the skull fiat, good stop, good muzzle length & cushioning & a stunning expression. Will always appeal in stance but on the move he was a bit too proud of his tall which will always detract under me & I felt he was less positive in hock viewed going away but he has class.

Rather a smart, well jacketed ruby of lovely colour, so shapely in stance & a lovely size, liked his head, good flat skull, well rounded eyes which are a good size & colour, long ears, well defined stop, good muzzle cushioning, moved out the smoothest in this class.

Out of a larger mould but all in proportion although I feel he could lose some weight to advantage. Good head, excellent muzzle, lovely eyes & long ears, in very good coat.
