Mrs S V Barwell |
It was a great pleasure and privilege to be asked to judge dogs at this, our most prestigious show. Firstly I would like to express my thanks to the Committee for their hard and successful work in making this new venue for our show so exhibitor friendly. I am quite sure that the superb lighting, airiness, space and above all great atmosphere of friendly competition spell well for the future.
My general observations were that we have some truly lovely, healthy dogs of which their breeders and exhibitors should be justifiably proud, particularly in view of the horrendous and unjustifiably bad press to which our breed has been subjected in the recent past. I found very few dogs with incorrect dentition: on the whole, there were good necks and shoulder placements and of course, all dogs displayed excellent temperament. There was one area, however that did indicate a need for some attention: hind movement - too many dogs were moving too close behind.
My thanks are due to my stewards, Hilda and Monique for all their hard work and for keeping me in order. My co-judge Brian Mitchell and I were in complete agreement throughout. Our BOB was truly magnificent, a sight to behold and the final applause was both deafening and gratifying!

Tricolour. Without doubt the best Tricolour I have judged in decades. Prettiest of heads, dark eyes, flat between his lovely, full ears, crested neck sweeping down to lay of shoulder. Good spring of rib, nice angulation of stifle. And if that wasn’t enough, a joy to behold on the move, at one with his handler, moving with drive off those hocks, tail a perfect extension of his spine. Clarity of markings outstanding in glorious coat and condition. Rich tan in all the right places and beautifully broken markings in accordance with the standard. What a star - a truly beautiful dog. CC & BIS in complete agreement with co-judge Mr Brian Mitchell. |

Mr B Mitchell |
This was my last time judging Cavalier bitches, having first awarded CCs in the breed in 1978. So it’s not surprising I look back over the years and make comparisons. Today’s entry was a difficult one. There were some truly lovely exhibits on show and some very good ones a level down as well as promising youngsters for the future but too small a percentage of the whole number. Which made me wonder why I felt that way. (Remember it’s only one view.) Having sat here and pondered I think I’ve come up with an answer, at least one that strikes me as being a part of the story. People who’ve been around in the breed for a good many years will remember that there was a time when back ends were not very good. There was a lot of hockiness. However, and it is a big however, forehands were on the whole better than they are today. Lovely clean shoulders helped give good necks and a flow to the whole dog that is seen too little now. Of course not all exhibits were so blessed then but certainly a bigger proportion than is currently the case. Yes, back ends have improved enormously but they haven’t done so while keeping what was already there. The result is too many shapeless Cavaliers. Perhaps there’s a moral here: Go to extremes in one area and you’ll lose out in others.
My day was made so much easier thanks to Richard Cornaby and Roy Wilkinson. Sheena Maclaine and Lesley Jupp couldn’t have been more helpful.
