Bitches Mr A Wight
What a marvellous appointment this was. Hats off to everyone concerned as this was a super event staged in an excellent Leisure Centre. There was a wonderful atmosphere created by a hard working set of officials, the organisation ran like clockwork, my stewards were faultless (and amusing!) and I did have some lovely exhibits to judge.
I must say a special Thank You to Rob & Chris Dix who were kind enough to meet me at Gatwick, give me a tour of Hampton Court then a tasty meal overlooking Epsom racecourse and the following day took me to the show then back to Gatwick. A truly enjoyable time. And it was a delight to see Tom Boardman in such fine fettle.
As an outsider to the breed, I feel it may be useful to make some observations on how I found the breed. I know you have not had your problems to seek with all the publicised adverse veterinary problems you have had to deal with, but I can say that nothing I saw showed any indication of health problems.
What did alarm me was that in the lower classes there was a high percentage of bitches which had a reverse scissor bite or were in fact undershot. I did penalise that as it is wrong and should not be encouraged.
The biggest failing I find now is that fronts seem to get worse and in many cases you almost have to forgive that as most exhibits in a class have it.
The other point which struck me was more cosmetic I know, but your standard is quite specific re colour in tricolours and blenheims where it asks that the colour should be well broken up on a pearly white background. I found an amazing number which were almost saddle backed in self colour, be it the rich chestnut of the blenheim or the black of the tri. I find it a bit foreign and less attractive so hope this is a temporary failing and can be corrected.
My co-judge Michael Levy and I were in total agreement with all the major decisions with BIS going to Waters’ Ch. Maibee Make Believe, res. BIS & BOS to Aldous & Smith’s Ch. Aranel Angelic and these same two owners competing for BPIS which went to Waters’ Maibee Timeless. The Best Veteran was Hughes’ Ch. Loranka’s Star Surprise.
Finally, reading through the catalogue shows the huge influence which has been made on the breed by two particular stud dogs, Maibee Montrose and Ch Aranel Cosmic.

Minor Puppy (14 Entries, 4 Absent)
1st Coole’s Jolainey Naughty But Nice
What a charming start the day with this happy little blenheim. Outgoing, deliciously feminine in head, eyes and expression, correct mouth, uses her reach of neck to advantage, so well ribbed, in excellent bloom and really extends for and aft as she goes around the ring. A bright prospect.
2nd Vella’s Cinderlace Honey (TAF)
I thought her another with heaps of potential. Pretty faced, excellent muzzle and fill up, scores heavily in eyes for shape and expression, really well constructed with excellent angulations which she uses to good purpose on the move. Well weighted bone, neat feet and spotless in coat. At this stage I felt she was a fraction less compact on the stand which edged Naughty to the front.
3rd Turner’s Shalot Indian Queen
Another quite fetching baby of lovely make and shape. Correct size, good eyes and muzzle, long ears which are well furnished and she literally shone with well being. Such a happy, outgoing personality and a real show off when moving. Not quite the flatness in skull of those above.

1st Waters’ Maibee Timeless
At first I thought she was pretty though a bit diffident but given a few minutes to compose herself she was fine. Is endowed with that beautiful head and expression which almost seems to be a hallmark of her father, Montrose. Quite classic in proportions and framed by long well feathered ears. Useful neck, correct body shape and smooth croup line to a well set & carried tail. She drifted around the ring with an easy, elegant carriage and I was delighted she went BPIS.
2nd Cunningham’s Verheyen Laura
Another which I think shows lots of promise and style. In stance you can’t ignore the profile shape and lovely proportions. She has adequate angulation both ends and whilst her front could be tighter, her side action is smooth. I liked her head balance, the softness in her expression and the happy disposition as she moved around the ring.
3rd Hughes’ Loranka's Touching Heaven
Probably the most broken coloured of those placed and as always from this exhibitor, pristine in presentation. I thought her a lovely size, ample substance in body, a beguiling totally feminine headpiece, perfectly sound going away but at present she is just that tad wayward in front action.

Junior (11, 1)
1st Butler’s Tamyse Theodora
One which for me could be better broken up in colour, but this Blenheim is so feminine in headpiece, beautiful eyes for size, shape, colour and expression, is so well proportioned in length/height, has a decent spring of rib, level backline and was so very sound moving. Certainly personality plus in temperament.
2nd Chapman’s Ellemich Aurora JW
On my initial assessment she was the one to beat as I loved her head, nicely flat in skull, not overdone in stop, well filled foreface, a good nose and once again stunning in expression. Her outline will appeal as there is a nice arch to her neck, the back is level and croup so well finished. Side on she moves well but her front is a bit wayward at present.
3rd Fisk’s Pandoras Little Box avec Rebhann
Pleasing head but is one of those which at times developes the "worried" look which told against her. Her construction is excellent, especially well laid shoulders and a lovely depth of rib. Pleasing side action showing balance.

Yearling (15, 1)
1st North’s Jalesto's One Vision
Rather a nice b/t bitch which appealed to me on the stack because of her outline. Stylish, elegant, lovely head carriage, ample neck, well bodied and very good layback in shoulder with straight fore limbs. Whilst she needs a bit more fill up in muzzle, the skull is flat, the stop not over done and she has good eyes. Her action finally got her this spot as it is fluent. And her coat is black as ebony and silky.
2nd Hazeltine’s Juzandia Pepper Potts
Rather a nice ruby and looks like she could move out well but handler moves her at the wrong speed and on too tight a lead, so the pattern is uneven. Pretty headpiece, sweet in eye and expression, well boned with good legs and feet and the correct size. Could have better days.
3rd Holbrook’s Amantra Princess Royal
Tricolour scoring in size, compactness of shape, softness in expression and being in such good bloom. She benefits from excellent angulation but was just a bit too full of herself on the move.

Novice (9, 2)
1st Chapman’s Ellemich Cocochanel
I thought this blenheim to be the best for shape, proportions and side action. Pleasing head with a flat skull and correct sized eyes, in very good coat condition and she is a responsive show girl.
2nd Evans’ Purpleborn Possibility
What a pity this ruby was so un-enthusiastic, evidenced by her low head carriage and that "wish I was at home" expression. Her head is a good shape, long well set ears, excellent width in jaw and a good nose. Perhaps a tad longer in loin than I like, but this was exaggerated by her low head carriage. Moves a bit wide in front, well coated and it is a lovely texture.
3rd Smith’s Beaudale Bye Bye Lullaby
This ruby had a charming outlook on life. Could have a shade more skull width for me, but pretty in expression, long ears frame her face so well, well ribbed, very good feet and side on her action showed balance.

1st King-Smith’s Ispahan Bella Paola
Lovely name as Ispahan is such a beautiful rose. I see she is another daughter of Montrose and one to be proud of. In full coat which is a lovely texture, she never put a foot wrong in stance, using her neck so well, is blessed with adequate angulation both ends and she is a delight to watch going around the ring. I thought her face detail and expression were so typical of her breeding and she added to the quality of the line up for the CC.
2nd Towse’s Miletree Crystall
What a show off this one is. Personality plus, non stop wagging tail, effusive in temperament and greeted me like a long lost friend. Her head eyes, ears and expression I loved, correct mouth, richly coloured jacket and in such good coat. On the move she shows drive and uses her hocks so well. I would just like a fraction more length of leg to give better overall balance.
3rd Hogan’s Deeriem Carismatic for Stavonga
Not yet two and looking very much the teenager. I liked so much about her, the head and expression ooze quality and she moves well. At present is very unfinished in body and furnishings but she could finish very well given time.

1st Smith’s Wightisle Twist of Magic at Sapphireisle
Well coated, sound in action, very well ribbed and bodied and a lovely size. Very good headpiece, correct stop, lovely eyes and easy to handle. Just a bit more neck would finish the picture.
2nd Long’s Ronmal Sweet Serenity at Arroline JW ShCM
Her head handles so well, it is balanced, excellent width in jaw and fill up. Is one of those which "frowns" almost disapprovingly. She is well bodied and coated but circling the ring she moves a fraction over built so the smoothness of her outline goes.
3rd Tarabad’s Khatibi Edie Does It
Very well broken colours, whitest of whites, pleasing head, skull flattish, eyes could be larger for my taste, very good spring and depth of rib and she is such a happy person. Moved lightly with a decent degree of reach and drive.

What a pretty headed bitch this is and I was taken with her expression. She is really well bodied, was in excellent bloom and is outgoing in personality. Just a bit lacking in angulation at both ends and this is reflected in her action which, whilst quite sound, is restricted.
3rd Turner’s Shalot Lady Bethan
Sparkling coat and body condition and clearly the recipient of much TLC. Pleasing head, ample muzzle with a good underjaw, super temperament and her profile action shows ground cover. Just carrying too much weight over the rib and shoulders and her front is too wide when fore viewed.

Richly coloured bitch of good size and substance. Pleasing head, eyes could be a little darker for me, lovely ears and feathering, quite sound in action but a little too happy with her tail carriage.
3rd Boardman’s Volney Pecan
Small pretty bitch but not over happy. Head handles well, good shaped eyes and long ears. Loved her size but felt that her handler handicapped her on the move, encouraging her to step out, then checking her so that her side action was in fits and starts.

1st Hughes’ Ch Loranka's Star Surprise
Unsurprising to read she is titled as she has that air of regality about her. Beautiful size for her sex, delightful headpiece, gorgeous eyes and ears, nose just lacking pigment at the moment, really well constructed and angulated & so very sound in action.
2nd Bartlett’s Korolevsky Anna Akhmatova
What a delightful headpiece and expression this attractively coloured tricolour has. Lovely size, fairly compact with a level backline and smooth croup to that gently wagging tail. Not in full bloom but spotless in presentation. Not quite the easy, smooth stride of Star in profile.
3rd Connor’s Montcolly Mariah of Gadeslain
An eager beaver of a b/t who is still so full of her own importance. In sparkling bloom, she was shining in jacket, is quite compact in proportions and has a most winning expression from those lovely eyes.

1st Coole’s Jolainey Sugar Babe
Surely one heading for her title. I loved everything about her except her tail carriage, where she is so filled with self belief that she motors around the ring with her tail a little too much above the horizontal for my liking. She is a joy to handle on the table, perfect size for her sex, beautiful headpiece, so flat in skull, ample stop, gorgeous foreface and nose, long leathers and those bewitching eyes. I see she is a sister from an earlier mating of that which produced the promising MPB. She is free and positive in action and just needs to learn a little self control to hit the big time.
2nd McInally’s Dalvreck Misteeq
Another who thinks her tail is a flag pole! When at attention in stance she has an air of quality and style. I loved her neck and outline, really well ribbed with good legs and feet. Her head is so good, long ears, well fringed and her expression is a delight. Just needs to be schooled to move out with charm and elegance rather than like a bullet train as she is basically sound but erratic.

Blenheim of good size and substance, very feminine in head and expression, excellent condition and good action when viewed from behind and in profile.
2nd Evans’ Salsara Sweet Senorita at Evansly
I thought this B/T might win this as at first glance she appealed to me from her outline, it»s overall balance and that hint of style she conveys. I loved her skull, ear leathers & those beautifully expressive eyes but would just wish for her to have a broader muzzle and fill up. But she has charm.
3rd Waters’ Maibee Shine On
For me this Blenheim is more handsome that prettily feminine but she is so well constructed, is completely sound on the move, is immaculate in coat and presentation and is such a showgirl, that she is hard to ignore. Will have many admirers and could gain her title.

Another Montrose offspring and again that hard to overlook headpiece. It simply has balance, shape, charm in spades and is carried on a well made, fairly compact body, super outline and in excellent bloom. Her side action confirms how well constructed she is and she never gave up trying. She most certainly is an excellent example of the breed.
2nd Taylor’s Ch Rosscrea Graceland
Another really stunning bitch with a head of beautiful proportions. Her eyes are a joy as is the expression. She handles well on the table, strong ribs of ample depth, good length of leg and a well finished croup. Another which pleased as she circled the ring but on the day she was just toeing in a bit too much when coming towards me.
3rd Craig’s Aldachell Sophisticated
Blenheim with the lozenge and the proud owner of a soft, typical cav expression. A gentle, happy character with a really attractive outline and eager to show off her virtues. Just not quite the width in forechest of those which beat her so came towards me a little to close in front.

1st Aldous & Smith’s Ch Aranel Angelic
A true toy spaniel in every way. Commanded the ring on entry, she just oozes sheer class and is so quintessentially feminine. She poses like a model, her outline and it’s contours are there to be enjoyed, her coat and presentation were flawless and her headpiece can only be handled and admired. Her expression is a joy and I found her irresistible. She went around the ring the picture of assuredness and elegance and I was thrilled to add to her laurels. CC, BOS & Res. BIS
2nd Rennard’s Ch Deranmar Francesca JW
I believe was my BP when I judged the breed a few years ago at Southern Counties. So I was delighted to see how well she has done. There was not a better moving bitch here on the day and she scores so heavily in the soundness of her construction, allied to her stylish, beautifully balanced head. She has a super eye for size, shape and expression, lovely weighted foreface and correct mouth. Not in her best bloom compared to the winner and she is not quite so short coupled as her but she clearly is a very worthy Champion and deserved the Res CC.
3rd Hughes’ Loranka's Sherrie Baby JW
This tricolour had one of the very best heads of the day. Spot on for size, skull width, stop definition, weight in foreface and those gorgeous eyes, almost lustrous and quite beguiling. Her construction is good, she was in beautiful body and coat and she is basically sound. However, there was a lack verve in her stride, the elegance was not there and she seemed rather bored. Won this spot on the sheer class she conveys on being handled.
