Scotland is a special place for me as I had my first judging appointment in Edinburgh, so to be invited to judge a Club Open show in Alva was a real treat. The atmosphere was relaxed and made extra special as everyone sang Happy Birthday to the Club’s President, Marie McFarlane, who, at the time of writing, was about to reach an auspicious milestone.
Thank you to the Committee, Show Manager and my very able steward, Liz Cochrane, who made this day a cherished one for me. My sincere thanks too, to the many exhibitors who entered their cavaliers, some coming from quite a distance and I was informed that the snow on the east side kept some exhibitors away. It was wonderful to judge the Special Vintage class and to see the over 10 year olds enjoying their day. I was impressed with the overall presentation and privileged to judge many quality cavaliers.

Veteran (4 Entries, 1 Absent)
1st Lunam’s Flossybrook Total Eclipse
A smart 9 year old b/t behaving like a youngster in good condition. Masculine head, well framed with long ear featherings, firm body with good depth of chest and delightful temperament. He moved with verve, coupled with soundness won him BVIS.
2nd Lunam’s Mellow Moment with Flossybrook
Ruby with a shorter muzzle, nice eyes wider apart. Another happy boy with a richly coloured coat. Good neck and shoulders, moved well in profile but preferred the stronger and wider rear of winner.
3rd Hargrave’s Cavallino Jaeger
Minor Puppy (4, 1)
1st Baillie’s Selkies Odanodan at Fyrnrose
A promising puppy of nearly 7 months. Head development just right for his age with clean and even markings. Lovely eyes and great pigment. Heavy markings on a well made body, with fluffy puppy coat that can sometimes hide his neck and angulations. Moved with drive from behind and an excellent tail carriage. A superb showman for one so young, to win BPIS.
2nd Rogerson’s Rabymar Great Expectations
Another quality puppy a month older but smaller than 1st. A typey well marked boy with a correct silky coat of clarity. Good front assembly. Needs time to tighten up and settle on the move.
3rd McMurray’s Cinderlace Hypericum at Merryoth
Puppy (5, 2)
1st Baillie’s Cavallino Antonio
An attractive effeminate boy of 10 months heading up a lively class. Slightly bodied but with good proportionate bone and a nice length of neck. Standing with a pleasing shape. Richly coloured coat of length and well textured, moved well round the ring.
2nd McKeracher’s Barsac Dreamboat
A mature blen puppy with a handsome face. Nice white collar with a lozenge. Good width on ribs and deeper in chest. Lost out on the move with his tail carriage.
3rd Linton’s Princlova Sweet Devotion At The Kop
Junior (3, 1)
1st Gaskell’s Jeilohn Coinneach
An upstanding, smart tricolour boy of 14 months. Sporting an eye catching profile and balance that draws your eye to a flashy well marked coat. Attractive head with good tan markings and ear set. Firm body, just right for his age, strong front and back. Looking fresh, moved self assuredly round the ring with particularly good head and tail carriage won him RBIS.
2nd Rogerson’s Rabymar Magic Wizard
A b/t with a gentle expression, sensitive eyes, correct dentition, good tan markings. A neat and smaller boy than 1st. Lacking a little confidence, hence not showing off his neck and shoulders to advantage.
Maiden (6, 1)
1st Sloan’s Turretbank Oliver
Richly coloured blen of 18 months. Intelligent looking with rounder forehead and nicely filled muzzle. Elegant neck and angulations, longer cast. Beautifully presented and flowed round happily with reach and drive.
2nd McIntyre’s Delhaze I Have A Dream
Another quality blen, appealing head, with correctly spaced eyes. Liked his shape and make, well marked, short coupled and stood square. Not being very cooperative today. Moved well, just preferred the finish of 1st.
3rd Young’s Stokies Gingle Bells
Novice (6, 2)
1st Sloan’s Turretbank Oliver
See Maiden.
2nd Gow’s Costara Ruadh at Lyncraeg
18 months old ruby. Good angles and bone. Correct foreface on classic lines, a little raw at the moment in a well proportioned frame but with coat would finish to be a lovely boy. I judged his father and this boy seems to have inherited his super movement from him. Happy disposition.
3rd McIntyre’s Delhaze Highland Fling
Graduate (6, 1)
1st Inglis’ Chantismere Mister Sandman of Craigowl
A well finished headed and mature blen. Large eyes, good ear set, firm body, plenty of heart room, good bone and muscle tone. Straight coat of correct texture and colour. Best mover in the class, strode out to cover ground well.
2nd Sloan’s Turretbank Sloan Square
Looked immature stood next to winner. 2 year old blen, slimmer and more upright. Pretty head with well feathered long ears and round eyes. Good topline on stand and move but could not match winner’s front assembly.
3rd Lang’s Waldor Manhatten Among Celxo
Post Graduate (4, 0)
1st McInally’s Dalvreck Danzatore
Clear winner in this class with his depth of quality. A well balanced blen. Although his uneven head markings can sometime detract, has lovely dark eyes and pigment. Glamorous coat in wonderful condition, with a long plume of a tail. A true mover.
2nd Drennan’s Blairburn Bits N Bobs of Calaten ShCM
Another nicely balanced dog of good type I have admired in the past from a distance. A nice size and impressed with his hind quarters. A bit unsettled today and seemed distracted which sometimes spoilt his outline. Sound on the move and unlucky to meet 1st on form.
3rd Culbert’s Spindlepoint Covent Garden
Special Post Graduate Black & Tan/Ruby (4, 1)
1st Lunam’s Tingewood Red Oktober
A varied trio of a class with the first 2 being chalk and cheese. A ruby of smaller frame than 2nd, needing maturity but with excellent coat colour. Pretty headed with a splendid temperament. Won on breed type.
2nd Kirkwood’s Marisk Macallan
Although very well schooled and a better mover than 1st, this soundly made b/t was up to size. Well presented with good tan markings. Overall he needed a bit more refinement, both in head and frame.
3rd Taylor’s Costara Rufus.
Limit (2, 0)
1st Waters’ Maibee Time After Time
This famous kennel produces dogs synonymous with quality and consistency. An eye catching exhibit, oozing with breed type and just coming into his own. Beautiful head with the most glorious expression and huge round eyes. It was lovely to go over a perfectly sized blen, well constructed with the right amount of substance, moderate in everyway and nothing over done. Although heavily marked, has straight coat of good colour, lovely texture and just the right amount so as not to disguise his attractive shape and angulations. With a sound body, he could do nothing but move effortlessly round, driving with short pasterns and an impressive topline and tailset. A well made toy spaniel and my star of the day. Commanding the ring and perfectly at one with his handler to win BIS.
2nd Lang’s Waldor Manhatten Among Celxo
Was 3rd in Graduate. A blen with a kind expression. Correct head shape, ear set and long ear featherings. More forward and a little larger than 1st with a good depth of chest. A challenging boy to show who moved adequately round the ring.
Open (5, 0)
1st Rogerson’s Rabymar Untouchable
A neat b/t of high quality shown in full coat of raven black and correct bright tan. Liked his size with just the right amount of bone. Good proportions and balance. Shorter foreface, well spaced eyes with a gentle expression, hard to obtain in this colour. Attentive to his handler, moved well and true coming and going.
2nd Inglis’ Craigowl Coaster
Another toy spaniel, excelling in type. A 2 year old tri in full coat. A smallish package with substance but slightly lower on the ground. Handsome with appealing eyes. Correct tan with white patches of his markings in strategic places, accentuating a good neck and shoulders. Good profile movement and head carriage. Didn’t stop wagging.
3rd Drennan’s Blairburn Bits N Bobs of Calaten ShCM
Special Vintage Dog or Bitch (7, 2)
1st Morrison’s Ailcres Blue Heaven
Like a fine vintage wine, they get better with age. An elegant b/t heading a very special class of over 10’s. This youthful looking girl just 3 months short of her 13th birthday. Full of presence wearing a shiny coat in tip top condition. An attentive pretty girl with sparkly eyes and attitude. Moved round happily and would have given the youngsters a run for their money.
2nd Glen’s Sandbrae Atomic Blue
Another b/t enjoying her day. An exhibit of pure breed type. Good size and feminine. At almost 12 years of age, she can be forgiven to be carrying a little bit of weight on her shoulders, slowing her down on the move.
3rd Gow’s Paulian Royal Union

Veteran (7 Entries, 3 Absent)
1st Waddington’s Spindlepoint Kim Crawford
A blen, 8 years young, nice markings on a wealth of coat. Pretty headed charming girl with bright eyes, tapered muzzle, lovely long ears, good length of neck, turn of stifle and of a nice type. Moved with a correctly held tail.
2nd Bates’ Kavenka Sugar And Spice
A stronger headed girl with exquisite eyes and sympathetic expression. Broader front assembly and well ribbed. Typifies a nice honest bitch.
3rd Dodds’ Damaron Tamarella At Itsadodal
Minor Puppy (8, 3)
1st Johnstone’s Delhaze Zuleah
Immature and slender for her 8 months but she made up for it with her poise and outlook. Evenly marked on head with dark eyes and nicely filled muzzle, correct bite. Liked her cobby well marked body with puppy coat in abundance. Moved round with energy and a real look at me attitude.
2nd McMurray’s Cinderlace Primrose at Merryoth
A quality exhibit of 6½ months. Wonderful expression generated by large dark eyes and rims. Development just right for her age. A little longer in loin, good turn of stifle with good richly coloured coat coming. Kept topline and tail on the move. Just preferred the neatness of 1st.
3rd Rogerson’s Rabymar Zanthie
Puppy (5, 2)
1st Waters’ Maibee Timeless
This typey 9 month old stood out. A puppy of a lovely size and angulations for her age. Pretty headed with a narrower blaze, huge large eyes of good colour. Particularly impressed with her crest of neck and shoulders. Coat of lovely texture and colour. Needs to tighten up a little but still the best mover in the class. Unsettled in the challenge for BP. BPB.
2nd Heatley & Fitzsimmons’ Fyrnrose Beaba at Glendream
Slightly larger than winner, one of quality. Appealing expression with a correct head shape and good ear set for her age. Heavily marked with a firm body and good bone. A lot to like and a promising puppy but lost out today with a happier tail.
3rd Baillie’s Cavallino Gabriella
Junior (5, 2)
1st Waters’ Maibee Santa Anna
A blen girl that grows on you. One of good type, shape and make. Nice rounded bone for her size. Wider head markings leaving room for a lozenge. Although framed with long ear featherings, her head has room for development. A positive mover and showed well.
2nd Halbert’s Izzharree Amber Amor Amor
Larger in frame and heavier front quarters but better angled upper arm than others in class. Nice pleasing eyes, good pigment and coat. Carried her tail well but could have moved a little faster.
3rd White’s Rothes Hazel at Carleny
Maiden (2, 1)
1st Sloan’s Turretbank Drama Queen
A blen, stood alone here but also won the following class. Her overall outline and balance appealed to me very much. A likable head and expression with well pigmented nose. Delightful temperament. Chestnut colour coated, correctly textured but heavier marked. Drove round with good topline and tail carriage and although a slimmer girl, had enough width moving to and fro.
Novice (6, 3)
1st Sloan’s Turretbank Drama Queen
See Maiden
2nd Glen’s Sandbrae Serenade In Blue
A b/t with a pleasing expression with good tan markings. Liked her head shape. A little longer cast, lovely neck, good ribs and nicely sized. Shame she was playing up on the move spoiling her topline.
3rd Bates’ Kavenka Blossom
Graduate (8, 3)
1st Sloan’s Turretbank Crystelle
A blen covered in full coat in great condition, length and clarity of colour with a fitting white collar. Pretty, large round eyes, well filled face, giving her ‘coochiness’. Body maturing just right for her age, nice angles all round. Can sometimes seem disinterested, not using her ears and nearly cost her the class.
2nd Lunam’s Brasingamen Rough Quest to Tingewood
A b/t bitch who left her clothes at home today. An endearing expressing with a longer length muzzle. Loved her size, elegant in neck and stood squarer than 1st. Moved with a good topline, just lost out on her condition. A happy girl.
3rd Beswick’s Blairburn Bramble of Patras
Post Graduate (6, 2)
1st McInally’s Dalvreck Misteeq
A beautifully turned out eye catching blen, even markings on a nicely filled head. Smart outline, well constructed, in wonderful overall condition, albeit could do with losing a little weight. Moved with confidence and showed well for handler. A girl I liked a lot and considered for further honours.
2nd Waddington’s Spindlepoint Chelsea
A wilful 18 month old with a happy disposition. Pleasant and slimmer headed than 1st. Firm bodied, less mature and trimmer. Richly coloured coat, good strong rear, keeping topline and tail on the move.
3rd Beswick’s Blairburn Bramble of Patras
Special Post Graduate Black & Tan/Ruby (5, 1)
1st McCabe’s Kenmilfore Bonnie Lass
A pretty b/t with appealing eyes, in remarkable condition for her 5 years. Well made package in a wealth of coat, perhaps her tan could be a little brighter. Laid back happy temperament, demonstrated in her stand and movement. Clearly enjoying her day.
2nd Lunam’s Brasingamen Rough Quest to Tingewood
See Graduate.
Limit (6, 1)
1st Waters’ Maibee Softy Shimmer
This almost 2 year old caught my eye as soon as she came into the ring and won the class easily. Lovely type, feminine with a gorgeous head and super pigment. Ideal size, nicely made all round with a brilliant tail set. Richly coated and beautifully presented. Just needed to hold her head a little higher on the move and I felt she could have given a little bit more at the end in the challenge. A really close decision and on another day, she would have won top honours. RBB.
2nd Gow’s Lyncraeg Hosanna
A pretty exhibit with a more classic head, nice eyes and correct length of muzzle. Squarer outline, moderate in neck, neat and compact with strong hind quarters. Moved soundly and an animated exhibit.
3rd Baillie’s Fyrnrose Mrs Tiggy Winkle JW
Open (4, 2)
1st Waters’ Maibee Shine On
Another girl from this kennel who made an impression. An attractive girl with an endearing expression and alluring eyes. Well proportioned, nicely set shoulders and good angulations. A little in between coats at the moment but enough to make a striking impact with her more statuette profile on the stand. Splitting hairs in the challenge with the Limit bitch, but could not deny her on her elegance, flowing and driving movement, head carriage and showmanship. BOS.
2nd Glen’s Sandbrae Beyond The Blue
A b/t of 6 years. A typey girl, pleasing head with sweet expression and good tan. Better fore than hind quarters. On the move, had an excellent tail carriage, which was probably the best on the wholecolours today. A very nice bitch who lost out to youth and unlucky to meet 1st.
