Dog Results Bitch Results Breeders Competition
Dogs Mr G A Davies
This was an assignment I had long been looking forward to; and I thank the officials and committee of the club for inviting me to assess the males of the breed at this prestigious event.
I approached my task in exactly the same way I judge any other breed; the foundations upon which I build are:- health, fitness, temperament, the ability to move freely without restriction, to be free from any form of exaggeration, and to be generally sound. These pre-requisites for me are non-negotiable.
Now to breed specific issues:-
What I was looking for as my ideal was a small, well-balanced dog that was within the weight limits of the standard, a dog that possessed true breed type with moderate quality bone and of compact stature and displayed the gay, friendly temperament that the breed is noted for.
Whilst I essentially want a CKCS to be a "Toy Spaniel", I do not expect it to be weak, flimsy and weedy.
What I did find was that temperaments were geneally excellent and there was an abundance of sound, healthy dogs that conformed to my requirement. However, the issues that gave me greatest concern were size and build. I found far too many examples of the breed that were too big and too heavily boned, long and rangy. I also found too many examples of less than perfect mouths.
In conclusion to this lengthy preamble, I want to commend all the breed clubs that in conjunction with the Kennel Club are doing so much to eradicate the problems that challenge this lovely breed. There are those who do their utmost to discredit. Not enough recognition is given through the media of the excellent work that is taking place and the significant steps forward and improvements that have been achieved in the past years The vast majority of serious breed enthusiasts are open, transparent and honest in dealing with health issues, and with the support of breed clubs and the K.C. you will move forward. The breed clubs set standards of excellence of working in unity with breeders, exhibitors and the governing body of the sport in constructively dealing with their problems.
