Dog Results Bitch Results Breeders Competition
Dogs Mr A S Wood (Fittlewood)
My thanks to the President and Committee of W.E.L.K.S. for the invitation to judge a breed I have cherished for over 30 years. It was a truly delightful and memorable day filled with kindly and beautiful dogs. There is an emotional twist concerning BOB which I’ll mention in the report on BOB. Full credit to the excellent steward who worked alone and uncomplaining all day without a break to ensure that BOB made the Group, where she was pulled out in the last cut.
As usual before an appointment I had deliberately not sought to observe the exhibits during the previous year, nor studied results, as I like to take a fresh view of the breed. The class winners were all dogs I would gladly take home as they were beautiful and moved well, particularly in front which is encouraging as I used to think of this as a breed weakness. Perhaps the breeding of the winners demonstrates who has overcome this fault (or never had it).
I should like to offer further general comments on the exhibits who were presented for consideration. They are not intended to offend breeders but there is a noticeable type which is attractive but veering away from the breed standard. May I recommend that exhibitors read again The Cavalier Club "Interpretation of the Breed Standard" and in particular the head. I am not a head "freak" nor a movement "maniac" but feel that I should speak out because fashions can become embedded in a breed. Tricolours universally had the kind of head which defines the Cavalier with large, round eyes, adequate length of muzzle, shallow stop and ‘almost flat’ skull. Blenheim heads were of two distinct types with some of correct type but too many have a short muzzle, deep stop and tending to a high, wide, domed skull, sometimes with small eyes. Wholecolours were variable with some also having wide skulls and/or short muzzles.
Not too many incorrect bites and I did forgive the puppies if they were level bite. Very small teeth in the bottom set seemed to be commonplace in all ages.
Size and shape were very variable but the major winners were within acceptable bounds for size and were excellent examples of the breed for type, construction & movement. Two eyecatching exhibits did not cope with the shiny indoor floor when we had to move inside, and had to pay the penalty. I gave a minor award to a dog which barely moved off the spot but was of super breed type. On grass it may have won a 1st but that’s one of the vagaries of showing dogs.
Several had profuse tears, not wholly attributable to the windy day. I doubt that these would have passed the vet in the unlikely event that they had won BOB. Umbilical hernia was fairly common. Not something I penalised but as they can be expensive to rectify and a health hazard it may pay to buy forceps to clamp the puppy’s cord if it is short rather than let the bitch struggle with it.
Please also note that Cavaliers should be shown "free standing on a loose lead", a point made very clear to me by Mrs Jo Norris at my first training lesson in 1983, and mentioned in the "Interpretation". They are not Terriers and you give the game away if you think that "stringing-up" conceals a poor front. Several exhibits moved to advantage when I asked them to move on a loose lead.

7yo B. with typical head and expression. Well-filled under the eyes. Shapely boy with a long, silky coat which was broken up. Medium bone. Moved and showed well. Nice dog.
2nd Newell’s Corbieanne Misty Storm ShCM
9yo on the day. Old-fashioned Tri in the best sense of the words in respect of the head with correct muzzle length. Of good type all round. A little tucked-up which cost a place.

Lovely 6m B in every respect. Tapered jaw with good teeth, dark eyes and length of ear. Pigment still to complete on nose. Well broken coat over a shapely body with correct turn of stifle. Level topline and excellent front. Bone correct for age. Really nice prospect.

11m B. with super head qualities allied to a stunning outline with good angulation front and back. Well-marked all round and with correct tail carriage. Moved powerfully covering the ground and showed well. Didn’t flag in the challenge. Up to size but a good prospect for the top drawer. RCC & BP.

Junior (11, 1)
1st Hawes’ Kersmere Minstrel
Handsome B. with typical head, pigmentation correct. Liked the shape of the body and the silky coat that was adequately broken up. So many good qualities. I would have liked a little more width behind but the majority of this class were rather below par on movement.

Well-marked B. in head. Pigment to finally fill in on nose. Good shape to body with correct bone. Adequately broken up in body coat.

Post Graduate (14, 2)
1st Rennard’s Deranmar Sinclair
B. with beautiful head, adequate muzzle and soft expression. First class mover. Coat a little sparse but well-broken and the overall shape was ideal. More leg than 2 giving a balanced appearance. I had this dog in mind for one of the major awards but he sat down and stopped showing.
2nd Hill & Webber’s Montcolly Jeffrey
B. Correct type with good head qualities. Well broken body markings. Moved well and had a happy wagging tail. Close up to 1.
3rd Bubb’s Wandris What A Performance JW

Limit (11, 1)
1st Li’s Avalcier Harvard JW
B. Very attractively marked and caught the eye immediately. Large eyes and dark pigments. Shapely body so moved well. Well within the size required. Beautifully prepared and shown to perfection. Muzzle a tad short for me.
2nd Rogerson’s Rabymar Super Ted JW
Ruby with correct eyes, pigments and teeth. Lovely long coat and well made body. Moved well and expertly handled. Again muzzle a tad short for me.
3rd Oliver’s Cheamley Spencer
Res Etheridge’s Trishine Tricky Situation at Diddlidors
VHC Firth’s Toshini Aberto At Firnick (Miss N J Firth)
Open (11, 2)
1st Mackenzie’s Carsan Chazmagic
B. Correct head with adequate length of muzzle and nice markings. Within the correct size but adequate bone. Well broken coat of adequate length. Moved and showed so well with true movement. Never flagged. Gave a good account of himself in the challenge but the bitch had the most gorgeous coat and flowed around the ring on a loose lead. I could not resist her. CC. BOS.
(Postscript: After the show I was intrigued to know the breeding of this dog and asked the owner for the pedigree. The breeding described in the catalogue hides a mine of quality).
2nd Levy, Sedgwick, Cline & Puenchalard’s Am Ch Forestcreek Dream On of Pascavale
Another beautiful Blenheim with attractive markings, nice coat and good pigment. Moved and showed well. The head was too bluff for me to put it over 1.
3rd Hughes’ Loranka’s Moment In Time JW
Res Koster’s Harana Alfie Boe
VHC Hughes’ Kaishmar Kavanagh Loranka
Good Citizen Dog Scheme (1, 0)
1st Pack-Davison’s Charnell Manhatten
Res in Graduate class. Whilst this was a nice exhibit I do not think that "making a statement" with this type of class does anything for promoting the SCHEME. Its aims would be better served with a sponsored Open Stakes class.

2nd Rees’ Loranka’s Make A Wish with Embeth

B/T. Very nice exhibit with a good outline. Larger type but in proportion. Lovely coat, pigment and tans. Showed and moved well. A longer muzzle would have made a difference in the challenge.
2nd Wiggins’ That’s M’Cupboard Luv at Droleus
Tri. Correct head and eye with dark pigmentation. Good bone and shape to body with a good length to coat. More work to the coat would help. Showed and moved well.

1st Koster’s Harana Cilla Black JW
B/T. I wrote on my judging book SUPER IN ALL RESPECTS. From the classy head which is not overdone, the gorgeous silky coat of length and the free-flowing movement on a loose lead I was totally smitten with this lovely bitch. The beauty of her brought a lump to my throat. CC. BOB.
When I came to write the award cards I nearly lost it altogether as the name CILLA BLACK brought back memories of the first B/T of that name, Mr & Mrs Shearmon’s CH MOSSDOWN CILLA BLACK, whom Jane and I had cheered on for several seasons to her crown. I owe a lot to Ken Shearmon for his advice and teaching on judging and how to prepare a dog and it was such a happy coincidence to be the first to award HARANA CILLA BLACK her CC (subject to KC confirmation). I’m sure that the second CILLA BLACK will prove to be every bit as good as the first.
2nd Rees’ Tusculana Carmella at Embeth
Tri. Lovely head, ideal size. Rather heavily marked but well made all round and moved far more fluently than 3.
