Report on Eye Testing at the Cavalier King Charles Championship Show held at the Kennel Club Building Stoneleigh on the 4th March 2017
|
Eye examinations were carried out under the BVA/KC/ISDS eye scheme. The purpose is to identify hereditary eye disease but also to record other conditions of the eye for the information of the owner.
Cavaliers suffer from 2 known inherited eye diseases in this country namely hereditary cataract and multifocal retinal dysplasia. The latter or MRD is a condition whereby areas of the retina develop abnormally resulting in folds of abnormal retina. Mild cases may have only a single retinal fold in one eye or in more severe cases there may be numerous folds in both eyes and sometimes a ring of retinal folds with the enclosed retina becoming detached.
82 dogs were examined of which 5 were from other breeds. No cases of hereditary cataract were noted but there were 5 cases of MRD.
Other lesions noted were.
Eye lid – 1 case of a small eyelid growth and 2 cases of distichiasis.
Cornea – 7 cases of corneal scarring (variable causes) and 4 cases of corneal lipidosis (a fatty deposit in the cornea)
Lens – 2 cases of marks on the posterior lens capsule and 1 case of a nuclear opacity
Vitreous – 1 case of a persistant hyaloid blood vessel (A fibrous tag attached to the back of the lens. This is a remnant of the blood vessel that would have provided blood to the developing lens)
The members of the CKCS club are to be commended for the number of dogs presented and the clear desire to monitor the inherited diseases of the eye and most importantly to act on that information. It was a pleasure to be asked to perform these eye tests.
Many thanks
