Dogs Mrs S Ireland-Cooke (Charnell)
It was a great honour to judge this most prestigious show and my sincere thanks to the hard working committee for making it such a special event. The hospitality shown to David and myself was second to none and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend. So many thoughtful little touches, the gala dinner, the goody bags and beautiful corsages for the judges!
My thanks must also go to my two efficient stewards who kept everything running smoothly allowing me to finish in good time so that my co-judge could get into the ring without delay. It was a pleasure to judge with Anita and we were unanimous in our decisions.
Several judges have remarked recently that there is a lack of quality in the breed as a whole and more specifically in the dogs. I certainly had some quality exhibits but sadly not in depth. I gave up on tails fairly early on even though bad tail carriage is one of my pet hates! Dogs that I have seen move well in the past did not move so well today and I wondered whether it was because they were not used to moving on carpet.
Some dogs were poorly constructed and I had several with incorrect bites and tiny teeth.
The recent years have been very testing for our breed and registrations and show entries have suffered badly. We all need to pull together and strive to produce quality if not quantity.

What more can I say about this lovely boy that hasn’t already been said? At ten and a half years old he is a credit to the breed and to his breeding. Lovely head type with large round, dark eyes, good nose pigment and gentle, yet masculine expression. Good neck and shoulder and great topline and tail carriage which he kept on the move. Really motored around the ring putting some of the younger dogs to shame. A great favourite of mine.
2nd Mynott’s Honeybet My Way
Nice size ruby boy who was so unlucky to meet the one above! He is the most gorgeous rich chestnut. Large dark eyes, correct length of muzzle and well cushioned foreface giving a kind expression. Excellent topline and tail and good turn of stifle enabling him to drive from the rear.

1st Engel’s Angel’s Pride Kasanova
Smart youngster who took my eye straight away. Well broken richly marked Blenheim with the most appealing head and expression, large dark eye of good size and shape and jet black nose. Everything just right for his age with the promise of a good coat to come. Correct size, well constructed and with good topline. Moved happily keeping his good tail carriage. How nice to be told afterwards that he is a grandson of my beloved Zac! The icing on the cake for me!! Best Puppy Dog
2nd Rhodes’ Calonlan Corona
Another nice well marked Blenheim boy, a size larger than Kasanova. So well constructed with excellent neck and lay of shoulder. Pleasing head with large dark eye and good earset. So much to like about him though I would prefer a shade shorter in back. Moved very well.

Enchanting little Blenheim with an abundance of coat, well broken and a good rich colour. Large dark eye and sweet expression. A proper little charmer and a real toy spaniel with loads of pazazz! Superbly presented and in lovely condition. Perhaps not the easiest dog to handle as he is so full of himself.
2nd Dawber’s Almonroyd Acclaim
Well marked tri. Correct head with good ear set and calm gentle expression. Good length of neck set into well laid shoulder, level topline and good tail set. Straight silky coat. Moved well.

Glamorous well coated and attractively marked richly coloured Blenheim who is an ideal size. Immaculately presented and well handled. Lovely eyes and jet black nose giving him a sweet expression. Moderate neck and good shoulder placement. Kept a good topline on the move.
2nd Whitfield’s Bevelmount Red Beaujolais
Compact well coated ruby who is still immature in head, but has so much promise for the future. Good eye and expression, perfect size with good neck and shoulder and firm topline. Good turn of stifle and well let down hocks giving him good drive behind.

Have loved this boy since I first saw him as a young puppy! Perfect size and a compact shape with good neck and shoulder, level topline, well turned stifle and short rear pasterns. Most attractive head and expression, with beautiful large dark eyes, jet black nose pigment, correct ear set and flat skull. Not exaggerated in any way. Profuse coat with rich chestnut markings on a pearly white background completed the picture. A bit erratic on the move today and a little staining under his eyes. Small points but just cost him the CC. I hope he will soon gain his title. He certainly deserves it. Res CC.
2nd Maclaine’s Lochbuie Cappuccino
Sound, free moving boy with so much to like. Very well constructed from his reachy neck, excellent lay of shoulder, level topline and good croup to the tip of his well set tail. Correct head with good eye and pigment and a kind expression. One of the best movers on the day with plenty of reach and drive. Just coming back into coat.

Beautifully made Blenheim with elegant neck, spirit level topline and a tail that comes straight off his back. Handsome, masculine head with dark eyes and good pigment. A joy to watch on the move, he really covered the ground with great reach and drive.
2nd Gibb-Stuart’s Chantismere Push My Button JW
I have admired this boy from the ringside many times but today he wasn’t happy in the heat. He wouldn’t use his ears and panting spoilt his expression. He is so typical of his breeding being a lovely rich chestnut colour, is well made with good bone and a quality coat. Pleasing head with large eye, well cushioned foreface and good pigment.

2nd Baillie’s Peakdowns Micawber at Cavallino
Nice size Blenheim who greatly appealed in outline. Moderate neck, firm topline and well carried tail. Good pigment and nice eyes. Not quite enough cushioning under his eyes making him a little effeminate in head but a very nice little dog.

I first judged this boy as a very immature 6 month puppy. I liked him then and I haven’t changed my mind. He has been slow to mature and now can trouble the best. So well balanced, his heavy markings accentuate his neat compact shape. Most attractive in head with large round dark eyes and jet black nose. Well cushioned foreface and good ear set giving a nice flat skull. Steady, happy mover who kept his level topline and good tail carriage. In the last five for Best Dog.
2nd Renaud’s Toralac Denton
Stronger headed well marked Blenheim. Very sound on the move. Well balanced with good neck and well angulated front and rear. Attractive rich coloured markings. White in eye spoilt his expression but there is a lot to like.

Blanket marked tri with a lovely outline. He really is the complete package. Appealing head with large eye and gentle expression. Short back with a good neck and shoulder. Good croup and correct tail set. Well angulated rear with neat short hocks. Rich, bright tan markings. Beautifully presented as one would expect from this kennel. Pulled into my final five for further consideration he just lacked animation on the day. A certain Champion whose progress I will watch with interest.

A boy I have always admired from the ringside. Lovely head type with well set ears and flat skull, large gentle eyes, jet black nose and clear, well defined markings. Perfect size with excellent topline, croup and tail carriage, traits which I always associate with this kennel who have consistently produced quality dogs of similar type over many years. A worthy Champion who I believe may still not have reached his best.
2nd Cortes & Londono’s Miletree Montesuma of Londoncor
The latest breed Champion and completely different in type and outline to winner but a classy exhibit. Classic head with large round eyes, good length of muzzle, flat skull and long well feathered leathers. Short back with firm topline and excellent tail carriage. Rich bright chestnut markings on pearly white. Not with his usual handler so did not move as steadily as I have seen him from the ringside on other occasions.

Delightful little tricolour who I had previously awarded top honours as referee at another breed club show. He has the prettiest of heads yet there is no doubting that he is a male. Gorgeous large dark round eyes that melt your heart, well cushioned foreface, correct length of muzzle, well set ears that fall forward to frame his face and enhance his lovely expression. Neat and compact in outline with good topline and tail, ideal size. He looked lovely standing with his gleaming black coat and large white collar. Unfortunately he was crabbing today which threw out his rear movement as well. I selected him in my final five in the hope that he would move as I have seen him before but it was not to be. One I would love to take home!
2nd Hughes’ Ch Kaishmar Kavanagh Loranka
Another I have judged on a previous occasion. Excellent breed type with rich well broken chestnut markings on pearly white. Nice size and compact in shape with a good neck and shoulder, topline and tail.

An old friend of mine who I have had the pleasure of assessing on two previous occasions. I awarded him the reserve ticket as a youngster in 2012 and last year agreed for him to take top honours at the Cavalier Club Show with my co-judge the late Geoffrey Porter. He has the most lovely head, masculine yet not overdone in any way, with a soft, gentle expression, large dark eyes and correct length of muzzle in proportion with width of skull. Ears set fairly high with long full leathers which he uses well so that they fall forward to frame his face. Elegant neck set into well laid shoulder. Firm body with well sprung ribs, good turn of stifle and short rear pasterns enabling him to move with drive. Bright, rich tan points and superbly presented long straight silky coat that gleams with health and condition. He is a lesson in presentation! A real glamour boy! I was pleased to award him the CC and with my co-judge Best in Show.
2nd Hazeltine’s Juzandia Johnny Be Goode
Another old favourite who I haven’t seen for a while. Small, compact little Blenheim with an appealing head, large dark eyes and sweet expression. He has the most lovely neck, excellent lay of shoulder with short level back, good croup and correct tail set. He really motors around the ring with great reach and drive. Out of coat today but nothing to hide.

Bitches Mrs A Godwin (Cavaliegh)
This prestigious show this year was hosted by the Midland Cavalier Club. The venue was the hotel ball room, some of the dogs found the carpet quite different to move on. It was an honour for me to judge the bitches at this well run show, so much though and planning for the week-end starting Friday with the gala dinner, BBQ and quiz night after the show on Saturday & the super goody bags we all had. May I say thank you to my hard working stewards who kept the ring in order and the committee who planned such a super week end. Bitches on the whole were good, outstanding exhibits, far and few between, these are the standard of our kennel, better the bitches, better the offspring will be, we cannot expect the stud dogs to put everything right in our puppies. I found lots of untypical heads with deep furrows badly stained from runny eyes which only emphasised this and made the head look more obscure and overdone. Small eyes still prevail, large, dark, round eyes are so important for the melting expression which is an absolute must in our dogs, this is one of the reasons I fell in love with the Cavalier, upright shoulders, poor toplines and tailsets were plenty, please watch for this as it spoils the outline on the move. On the whole I was very pleased with my overall winners and had some really lovely exhibits to choose from for the C.C.
