Dogs Mrs N Inglis (Craigowl)
I last judged in UK 2011, but in the intervening period I have watched the breed from both in and outside the ring. I consider myself a "glass half full" person and always hope to be bowled over by the dogs I judge, so I looked forward eagerly to this assignment.
Some recent show reports have expressed concern at the level of quality in today’s Cavaliers. I regret that I can only concur with what has been said in relation to construction. In the past you could find lots of excellent dogs with perhaps only a small shift away from what is laid down as desirable. Nowadays the top notch dogs are thin on the ground and more and more we are seeing dogs with poor construction and aspects that come nowhere near to the blue print that is the Breed Standard.
While considering what to write in my critique I thought it might be interesting to apply the FCI criteria of grading the dogs, to see how many at UK Toy I would have graded excellent. Even being generous, I found not much more than 50% would have made that grade. Numbers are falling but our standards also seem to be slipping. No one is denying that health should be a major factor but it is also paramount that the dogs be sound and not stray too far from the Cavalier hallmarks. The rich vein is still there but it is shallow. We should be producing the cream and not be settling for skimmed milk.
I would ask judges, both specialists and all-rounders, as well as exhibitors to ditch their rose tinted spectacles and look objectively at the dogs they are judging and exhibiting. My comments are not meant to offend merely to encourage. Just feeling impassioned for our breed and want the global admiration of our Cavaliers to continue.

Veteran (4 Entries 0 Absent) Loved seeing these old ones reliving their youth.
1st Claydon’s Ch Brymarden Montana JW
Despite his advancing years thought this well preserved 10 year old Champion deserved selection in the final deliberation for CCs. Handsome Blenheim still youthful in head, body and movement and I enjoyed watching him cover the ring with great enthusiasm and accuracy. Dark expressive eyes. Great neck, shoulders and firm topline. Well angulated behind and good tail set finished off his balanced outline. Loved his temperament. He was having fun and seeing him in this form was a smashing way to start the day.
2nd Harding’s Korraines Buckeye Boy at Markison
Another Blenheim, 2 years younger. Appealed for a variety of reasons..... breed type, size, rich chestnut colouring. Good looking boy with pleasing head properties. Liked his kind eyes and expression and lengthy ears framed a gentle face. Not the exuberance of winner and unable to match his sound movement but has many admirable Cavalier features.
3rd Newell’s Corbieanne Misty Storm ShCM
Res Kilcoyne’s Granasil Dr Pepper
Minor Puppy (6, 1) Not the strongest class. Plenty of good breed points on offer but sadly not all on the one dog which made it a problematic class to judge.
1st Renaud’s Ellenaud Freddie Mercury
Opted for this 8 month well marked Blenheim and am sure, if a couple of issues are addressed he will have continued success. Has such a lot going for him. Sweet nature. Lovely head, eye and expression. Great size, good substance, short backed. Plenty of coat and well put together. His owner needs to devote time to present his coat better and exercise more control on the move. He’s worth it!
2nd Bayliss’ Castlewytch Bumble Bee
Will be interested to see how this 7 month Blenheim baby develops. At this stage, head needs to bloom but if it develops into a more striking outlook, then he will come into his own. Well-schooled, making my job the easier. Slightly bigger than winner but scored for coat clarity. Chestnut was rich and vibrant and presentation was exemplary. Sensible temperament. Liked his outline with neck, shoulders, top line and tail set all blending together smoothly.
3rd Fisk’s Rebhanns Arthur Sixpence
Res Gamble’s Lisgarth Stereophonic
VHC Connor’s Gadeslain Perfect Gent
Puppy (8, 1) Wholecolours ruled in this class in places 1st to VHC.
1st Koster’s Harana Bruno Marrs
Two Black/Tans who pushed each other all the way. Both super-sized, moved fluently, in fabulous straight, silky coats and gave 100%. The deciding factor was the expression. Whilst I found ‘Bruno’s’ head the more appealing, and there is still time to bring the generosity I think he needs. ‘Henly’ has a touch more head but his expression was not as gentle. Possibly the clarity and distribution of the black and tan colours on his face gives that impression. If anyone wants to see how to present coats in first class condition, look no further. They were like silk.

Junior (8, 0)
1st Claydon’s Brymarden Carolina Sunrise
I recall how much of a fluff ball this Blenheim looked in his puppy classes. Not anymore .... today at 17 months he is now sleek coated and looked good enough to be a contender in the finals. So well put together that it is no surprise he moves effortlessly round the ring. Scores for neck, shoulder placement, top line and a tail that is carried straight off the back. He motored and it was a treat to watch him go. Fairly strong in head and not quite the sweetness of 2 but he is very handsome and in no way coarse. Bred in the purple out of 2 champions and has benefited from both parents. Should have a bright future.
2nd Wightman’s Ellemich Kenzo at Kailyflee
1 year old Blenheim in his first Junior class so gave a good account of himself to win this place against older competition. Presentation could not be faulted. In fact one of the best turned out on the day. Has the same sire as winner but his strengths lay in different areas. Ideal size, glorious deep chestnut markings, black pigmentation, dark eyes, lovely silky coat. Sympathetically handled to show off his best. Could not match the impressive outline and free easy gait of 1 when going around, but liked him a lot.

Maiden (8, 1)
1st Whitfield’s Bevelmount Red Beaujolais
Have admired the Bevelmount wholecolours in the past and this little lad is typical. Richly coloured Ruby whose moderation and total lack of exaggeration throughout appealed. Pretty head with soft eyes and gentle expression. Neat and tidy in size and shape. Happy and showy in temperament. Best mover in class. Just missed out on the puppy class by a few weeks.
2nd Bryant’s Ellemich Bugsy Malone at Lucanico
Cosmetically pleasing Blenheim who although rangier than winner was also balanced. Liked his outline on the move when he went with head up showing proud neck and firm top line and neatly carried tail. Mid brown eyes with kind expression set in head that was masculine. 13 months old and has entered the teens but will be eye-catching when mature and in full coat. Handled and presented well.

Novice (11, 0)
1st Hughes’ Loranka’s Moonshine
Striking Blenheim with lovely quality in head and the overall size I like. Happy to do all that was asked. Has super clarity in coat with well-defined markings. Chestnut bright and rich and white pearly. Short back, good ribs and a well carried tail completed the picture. Hats off to this exhibitor. Those who think presenting grubby dogs for examination is ok should take a leaf out of the Loranka book. As long as I have been showing Cavaliers she continuously brings out dogs in immaculate order. This one won’t be in Novice long.
2nd Hazeltine’s Juzandia Sergeant Pepper
Respectable Ruby one size up from 1. Lovely generous head with good eyes. Correct coat colour, rich red. Endearing personality. His honest qualities will always see him considered but today not in as good coat as winner.
3rd Phillips’ Tillymist Heez Harry Beau
Res Bryant’s Ellemich Bugsy Malone at Lucanico
VHC Cracknell’s Sorata Henly Wet Socks
Graduate (5, 1) Not a strong class. Assortment of shapes and sizes and by no means an easy task to arrange them in order of merit.
1st Carr-Tomlinson’s Ledesham Ezekiel
A tricolour coming up 3 whose coat was rather messy with dead hair needing removed. But he was the best constructed in the class and I liked his size, short back and agreeable head properties.
2nd Rhodes’ Calonlan Wellington
Another tricolour. This one, 20 months old with a very appealing expression. Nice size but shorter on leg than 1 who I felt more balanced. Well sprung ribs. Nicely turned out.

Post Graduate (13, 1)
1st Cortes & Londono’s Miletree Montesuma of Londoncor
Dogs who are too laid back don’t always make the best show dogs and ones with high energy, if channelled correctly, can reap rewards. This boy was on his toes today so much so his handler had a hard time keeping up with him on the move! But he drew attention with his animation. Attractive head with high set ears well feathered. Dark eyes. Even face markings. Handy size with good bone and he stood happily wagging showing a clean outline. Smooth sweep from neck, through shoulders and topline to tail. Spotlessly clean coat that gleamed. Depth of chestnut and the pearly white contrasted well to catch the eye. Knocking on the door for CCs and today he gave a great performance that saw him take the RCC. One destined for the top.
2nd Knight’s Carolus Don Ricco JW ShCM
Although 2 year old, this classy Blenheim is still looking juvenile against his challengers and I feel he has more to come before he is at his best. Slow maturity is not a bad thing but a little irksome whist waiting! I am sure his day will arrive soon. It is all there he just needs to come into full bloom. Not flamboyantly marked but his blanket markings highlight his clean lines and his conker chestnut coat colouring has instant impact. Head and expression appealed greatly with good pigment and a gentle eye. A happy boy who showed well.

1st Crossley’s Ispahan Sea The Stars
Blenheim hard to overlook as he has many of the ingredients required. Not a flashy boy but he has a gentle open face and on table examination he measures up well. Attractively arranged chestnut markings that are rich in colour. Good construction allows him to move soundly. Not much I would change except a size smaller. He won me over and loved his waggy cheeriness.
2nd Levy, Sedgwick, Cline & Puenchalard’s Pascavale Jacob
Blenheim handled by an 11 year old who did a great job. Quite a contrast to 1 and they appealed for different reasons. This one was heavier marked, smaller and prettier with gorgeous dewy eyes and black pigmentation that makes his expression striking. Lots of soft, silky Blenheim coat. Although he is 2 and half he gives the impression of being younger and that he still has some maturing to do. Did not match the hard to fault movement of winner.

1st Smith & Aldous’ Aranel Colby
Winner of the CC, Best of Breed with full agreement from Mick Shinnick my co judge, and finally Best in Show 4 to great applause from the spectators. A fantastic day for this tasty Blenheim taking his 2nd CC. The ultimate in the glamour stakes with glorious refined head and dreamy expression that comes from the eyes. Large, round, dark and very mellow. Ideal size with good body proportions and medium bone and shown in a lush well marked coat presented to a high standard. Has a short concentration span and gets easily bored standing for too long. On the move he sparks up and comes to life and his assets can be fully appreciated. Good drive from rear. Will be 3 years old soon and looking like this should collect several more awards. One I would take home in a heartbeat. Aranel at its best.
2nd Godwin’s Cavaliegh Jacob
A Pin up boy. Blenheim in full luxury coat who caught my eye as he entered the ring. Very glamorous with rich chestnut blankets markings, bright and vibrant. I love my boys to be bonny and this one is certainly that. Just found winner a touch more masculine. Almost flat skull, gentle eyes and good length of muzzle. Huge ears. Coat presentation was first class. He went well and on the go around his outline showed adequate neck, good angles front and rear and firm top line. Smashing size that befits the description Toy Spaniel and in my opinion one of the best to come out of Cavaliegh. Another high up on the list for the CC/RCC.

1st Cracknell’s Sorata Bertie
Was very taken with this 4 year old Black/Tan and he felt good to go over. Lots of glamour in head and coat and was shown in lovely bloom. Coat gleamed. Generous, masculine head with a hint of sweetness that makes an ordinary head more special. Sailed around the ring with style. See no reason, if he continues in this vein, that he shouldn’t win at the highest level.
2nd Lewis’ Leelyn Michael Buble for Carleeto JW
Another Black/Tan. This one only 17 months so giving away a little in age and finish. Again the size I like and he had plenty of personality. Ears looked as if they had been demolished (we have all been there!) and coat presentation did not match the exceptional turnout of 1. 2 nice boys who went well.
3rd Swann’s Flossybrook Nicholas
Open (5, 1) Small class but all dogs with a distinguished career. It was a compliment to judge them but a cheerless task to rank them.
1st Levy & Sedgwick’s Gamble On You Des Contemplations at Pascavale
Breed’s latest champion, 2 year old Tricolour whose turnout was splendid and his generous expression was text book. Lovely dark eyes, round, and large. Lots of tan in all the right places. Perhaps a shade richer on face would make him even more mouth-watering. Correct balance of skull to muzzle and ideal length of nose. Saddle markings that worked in his favour accentuating his clean outline. Firm topline both standing and on the move. Our Standard is laced with a request for moderation in many areas, and he complies for neatness. Bred in France and his time in the UK is bringing out his full potential with his best still to come. A dog to be proud of. Close up for the top certificates reminding me in so many ways of our own Cavaliers past and present.
2nd Mangham’s Maibee Perfect Touch of Charnavale JW
Blenheim who I feel has improved with every passing year and today he impressed. Will be 6 soon and carries his years well. Well off for bone and proves that it is possible to breed a small dog with substance. Sweet face with big round eyes giving a soft look. Appealed for his unexaggerated breed type and can see why his progeny have won him the title of Top Stud dog 2013. Matched winner well for size and neatness but preferred outline of "Gamble" on the go around.

Bitches Mr R Shinnick (Leelyn)
Many thanks to Leslie Jupp for commanding such a good entry & to wish her well. Knowing Leslie was a very ‘Standard & type lady’ it is hoped I lived up to her with my choices. Although I do not show the breed anymore this is just an age reason! I get quite concerned as to where the breed is going when I see these long bodies & short legs going forward – who altered the Standard?
