| If we look at people, we see many differences in skin colour, hair colour, length and so on. These differences are referred to as "variation". The variation in appearance, is partly caused by genetic differences between these people. We can say that there is "genetic variation". Genetic diversity is in fact, the existence of differences in the genetic material of a population. The extent to which, sufficient variation occurs within a population, is crucial because it determines adaptability. The greater the genetic diversity of a population, the better they can adapt to changing environmental factors such as epidemics, diseases, pollution and climate. |
